Except for the saved front facade and most of the staircase, the house had to be entirely rebuilt having suffered serious neglect
for many years. The major spatial input on the ground floor is the creation of an open kitchen living space,
with flat walls that lead straight out onto a new garden through a full height, full width sash window.
Full height cupboards on one side and a new thick, pocketed wall define the main kitchen living space.
Cupboards, recesses and doorways occupy the thickness of this pocketed wall.
By making a surface that is flat to the kitchen side but follows the old hallway line,
this wall resembles a long cheese-shaped wedge – narrowing the kitchen space and thereby making a false perspective
through to the garden.
